It's National Rubber Ducky Day! Back in 2002, when I was putting together our landmark “kids music doesn’t have to suckle” compilation The Bottle Let Me Down, I encouraged artists to cover their favorite songs from their childhood. I, however, had one request, made to Kelly Hogan: PLEASE cover MY favorite song: Sesame Street’s Ernie singing “Rubber Duckie.” According to my mother, whenever Bert and Ernie came on the ol’ Zenith, I was entranced. They were my heroes.
Kelly agreed. And here is her version...
Kelly’s version is one of my favorite things we’ve ever released. It is at once a perfect kids song—squeaky toys, rub-a-dub-dubby, a quick little joke about ducks not having ears—as well as a deliciously adult song. Kelly tosses a bone to all the daddy-os out there. Her breathy, Peggy Lee come-hither delivery practically invites you to move date night from a snazzy restaurant into the bubbly tub…meee-YOW!!!
So, celebrate National Rubber Ducky Day with us (the album's up for a steal).
Draw a bath, get your favorite yellow friend and think of Bert, Ernie, or even Kelly. But definitely not me. DEFINITELY not me. Nobody wants that.
