JC Brooks and The Uptown Sound have been my local band crush forever. I first ran into them about four years ago at the Hideout, where they revved up the crowd with their brand of Motown throwbacks with a post-punk edge, a charismatic frontman with movie-star looks (that's only part of the crush, I swear), and plenty of soul to spare. You dig our releases from The Detroit Cobras and Andre Williams? Find yourself immersed in Numero Group's soul comps? Then, we're pretty sure you're gonna like JCBUS.
In the following years, JCBUS has steadily built a fan base with sweaty rave-ups at places like Metro and Double Door, and gained some internet notoriety for their video covering Wilco's "I'm Trying To Break Your Heart." And as the go-to party band in Chi-boogie, the group was also tapped to play Mayor Rahmbo's inauguration last month in Grant Park.
Now, it looks like I get to go steady with my band crush! Yup, after about two years of people going up to Rob saying, "You've GOT to sign this band, they are amazing!" Bloodshot is happy to announce that JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound have joined our stable of fine artists. Look for their Bloodshot debut to be released this fall, but in the meantime, you can catch them at summer festivals, and opening for Wilco and Robert Plant.
We decided to ask JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound a few summertime questions to get to know them better:
Favorite summertime hangout in Chicago?
Jayson (vox): My apartment
Billy (guitar and vox): JCBUS HQ
Ben (bass and vox): My backyard in Avondale
Kevin (drums and vox): Any backyard, actually
Sox or Cubs?
Someone hands you a hot dog, what do you put on it?
Jayson: Just mustard
Billy: Hot sauce
Kevin: Mustard, onions, relish, hot peppers, celery salt on a poppy seed bun
Lollapalooza or Pitchfork?
Jayson: Never been to Pitchfork; my last Lollapalooza was in 1993 when I was in 8th grade [Ed note: That was probably a good time to stop going]
What's your current summer jam?
Billy: Second City [Billy's currently directing the Mainstage production, South Side of Heaven]
Kevin: My kid laughing [Awwww]
Welcome to the fold, boys!
