Bloodshot’s Best of 2013! (Artist & Staff picks)

Share

December 19th, 2013 by Rami

It’s that terrific/terrible time of year in which we think about the things we didn’t find to be trite, monotonous drivel and give thanks for the things that made us hold a little flame of hope for this world. 2013 was a year of…well, we’ll let our artists and the Bloodshot staff detail what made 2013 unique. Here is a decadent digest of our favorite music, movies, TV, food, trends, YouTube videos, and personal victories of this two thousand thirteenth year of our lord. Damn, it’s fun to talk about ourselves.

Bloodshot Artists

Cory Branan

Describe 2013 in three words:

Whelp, that happened.

Favorite concert/show you played in 2013:

The Weekender Fest in Melbourne.

Favorite concert/show you attended in 2013:

Lincoln le Fevre at the Weekender Fest in Melbourne.

Favorite 2013 music album:

Can’t really pull fav or pretend to not be biased, but my buddies Jason Isbell, Tim Easton, John Moreland, and Austin Lucas all released good work this year.

Favorite 2013 movie:

Again, may be biased, but Mud was fantastic.

Favorite 2013 TV or web show:

I really enjoyed Derrick.

Favorite book you read in 2013:

Not a new book, but I was destroyed by Dave Eggers What is the What?.

Best thing you ate in 2013:

It was probably at home. I’m lucky enough to have a wife that can tear up a kitchen. Her barbacoa comes to mind. Or the grit stuffing on thanksgiving.

Best thing you drank in 2013:

Got into that slow ‘n’ low rye. Kind of an old fashioned without the work.

Category of choice: Favorite In-Joke of 2013:

“You a fish egg.”

What everyone else loved but you just didn’t “get” in 2013:

That Scandal show. Hard to watch the facial contortions that it takes to deliver “dialogue” of that order.

Best bad decision you made in 2013:

Winter tour of Canada. Never a good idea on paper, but it’s going great. So far. (Editor’s note: as of 12/13/13. We didn’t hear of anything bad happening, though.)

Top personal victory of 2013:

Not sure I’ve had one yet. Knocking my wife up count?

What you are amazed still existed in 2013:

Naivety. Magazines. Two party system.

What you’d like to see disappear in 2014:

Special interest money funding elections- Assault rifles – two party system- TMZ.

What you are most looking forward to in 2014?

The birth of my son in (hopefully) January.

2014 New Year resolution and % chance of success:

Be a rad Dad (50-87%). Oh, and put out this new record (100%)

Robbie Fulks

Favorite concert/show you played in 2013:

Up in the middle of Maine, these guys put us in a cottage where there was a pool table, some board  games, a turntable, and heaps of  records in crates, from the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. There was a little coffee bar in the cottage and a cooler of bottled waters. Then they started bringing in wine. Then came a platter of freshly caught salmon, a salad of greens and blueberries and walnuts and ten other plants gathered that afternoon somewhere, and maybe six other equally involved delectations. Then the dessert course, a cake with icing on top: “Maine loves Robbie Fulks.” Then we played the show, which I don’t remember much. It was OK. Finally, we returned to the cabin, where there was bourbon and beer, and they had ordered a couple pizzas. It’s always nice to have some hospitality from country people.

Favorite concert/show you attended in 2013:

Bill Frisell’s Big Sur quintet at Space in Evanston

Favorite 2013 music album:

Noam Pikelny’s record of Kenny Baker tunes

PBS Newshour

Favorite book you read in 2013:

Tie — The World of Yesterday by Stefan Zweig and The Infatuations by Javier Marias.

Favorite YouTube video of 2013:

I don’t know. My son sends me clips of bizarre things; like last night, a big naked black lady swinging her penis around and laughing. Maybe that?

Best thing you ate in 2013:

Any one of 10 dishes I made from recipes in the cookbook Plenty.

Best thing you drank in 2013:

Oatmeal shake at Irazu in Chicago

Category of choice: Favorite Bad Hotel of 2013:

Econolodge in New Haven. Blood and hair on dirty sheets; crumpled wet used towels on the rack; angry night managers.

What everyone else loved but you just didn’t “get” in 2013:

Oh, almost every piece of popular recorded music.

Best bad decision you made in 2013:

Every time I gave my son $15 to buy a record it was a bad decision. Now my house is filling up with all the questionable 1970s rock-related music he likes, Frank Zappa and Herbie Hancock and Pink Floyd….and some of these I bought already, when they first came out.

Top personal victory of 2013:

I got to be on Buddy Miller’s radio show, and I got to play with some of my favorite American musicians.

What you are amazed still existed in 2013:

The Republican party

What you’d like to see disappear in 2014:

My family, for five hours every weekday, so I can write another record.

What you are most looking forward to in 2014?

I’m going to try to visit Milledgeville, Flannery O’Connor’s home.

2014 New Year resolution and % chance of success:

I resolve to stay alive while enduring subtle physical deteriorations, mainly unobserved on a day-to-day basis. Chances are excellent!

Matt Armstrong (bassist, Murder By Death)

Adam Turla (vocalist/guitarist, Murder By Death)

Describe 2013 in three words:

Too damn busy

Favorite concert/show you played in 2013:

Denver at the Bluebird Theater. We had to drive around Colorado because all roads in were shut down due to the massive flooding. We had to sneak in through a back road to make the show, and when we finally made it, people had done the same thing to make the show!

Favorite concert/show you attended in 2013:

Really enjoyed watching Larry and His Flask this year. So fun!

Finally fulfilling all of our Kickstarter stuff

What you are amazed still existed in 2013:

What you are most looking forward to in 2014?

Time off! Writing!

2014 New Year resolution and % chance of success:

To finish more songs that i feel so so about rather than scrap em early.

Lydia Loveless

Describe 2013 in three words:

Painful uncharted territory

Favorite concert/show you played in 2013:

Swamp Stomp in Rhode Island was probably the best show I’ve ever played with my band in its latest lineup; I think we really found ourselves that night. We’d also suffered a broken down van and two flat tires, so I think we were just happy to be there.

Favorite concert/show you attended in 2013:

Ke$ha! (I DON’T CARE WHAT YOU SAY).

Favorite 2013 music album:

Jason Isbell’s Southeastern; Todd May’s Rickenbacker Girls (Editor’s note: Todd May is Lydia’s lead guitarist); Sky Ferreira’s Night Time, My Time; The Strokes Comedown Machine

Best thing you drank in 2013:

I have a friend who makes amazing cocktails. Probably anything he gave me.

Category of choice: Favorite Quotation of 2013:

“I have plenty [of pussy] to eat at home.” – Rob Ford

What everyone else loved but you just didn’t “get” in 2013:

Kanye West. And pears.

Best bad decision you made in 2013:

The Ke$ha tattoo I got in my friend’s basement.

Top personal victory of 2013:

Breaking my writer’s blockade and writing a shitload of songs I’m incredibly proud of. (Editor’s note: her new album comes out February 18th.) Becoming penpals with Richard Hell (although that seems odd to call it a victory).

What you are amazed still existed in 2013:

My guitar player’s landline.

What you’d like to see disappear in 2014:

Rape. Is that too dark? Ummm… pears. And Kanye West!

What you are most looking forward to in 2014?

My album coming out, and the disappearance of pears.

2014 New Year resolution and % chance of success:

I’ve given up on those because I feel like I should just generally be a better person. I do want to learn Spanish. % of success? Hell if I know.

Jeremy “JD” Mackinder (bassist, Deadstring Brothers)

Describe 2013 in three words:

What Just Happened?

Favorite concert/show you played in 2013:

Akkurat in Stockholm, Sweden. The whole Sweden/Norway tour in general.

Favorite concert/show you attended in 2013:

The Bloodshot SXSW showcase was a lot of fun. Billy Bragg was really fun at the AMAs too.

Favorite 2013 music album:

Dock Ellis Band - Bad Songs and Waltzes

Favorite 2013 movie:

The only movie I made it to this year was Thor 2. I Netflixed like crazy, but, to the best I know, none of those were 2013. Thor is no one’s favorite movie (though, somewhat entertaining).

Favorite 2013 TV or web show:

Like everyone else with a pulse (and even those without… obligatory zombie joke) The Walking Dead had the most impact.  I also became obsessed with the Brule’s Rules clips, and since tour ended a week ago, I’ve basically watched Once Upon a Time and not much else. Shamelessly.

Favorite book you read in 2013:

Only finished two. One was a quote book of Jim Henson and friends. The other was Charlie LeDuff’s Autopsy of Detroit. One was inspiring, endearing, and a lot of fun, the other was by a self-serving loud mouth blow-hard who thinks he’s a badass but falls unbelievably short and is capitalizing on disaster while living in denial of that fact. Guess which is which. That being said, I really enjoyed both.

Favorite YouTube video of 2013:

Brule’s Rules…every single clip you dingus.

Best thing you ate in 2013:

I came to appreciate sushi for the first time this year. Had it before this, but really fell in love with it this year.

Best thing you drank in 2013:

Moscow Mules. Started in on them in Miles City, MT and just kept going.

Category of choice: Favorite City of 2013:

St Louis. Its still 1973 there, and I love it.

What everyone else loved but you just didn’t “get” in 2013:

The whole fox thing. (Editor’s note: we think he means this.)

Best bad decision you made in 2013:

After party in Louisville, KY.  Led to the new album title and one of the most memorable nights of my life, hilarity wise.

Top personal victory of 2013:

Surviving. We had lofty goals work wise; we met most of them and lived to do it again for 2014.

What you are amazed still existed in 2013:

Skinny jeans. People, they look awful. I certainly thought they’d be gone already.

What you’d like to see disappear in 2014:

Fakegrass: playing a traditional bluegrass instrument in a weak excuse for soft pop/rock music does not make you bluegrass or roots music. It just makes you annoying.

What you are most looking forward to in 2014?

Another album, another tour, another round.

2014 New Year resolution and % chance of success:

To see the Detroit Lions play in the Super Bowl, which has as much of a chance of happening as me buying a Hootie and the Darius Blowsuckers fakegrass tribute album with autotune featured as a guest vocalist. Don’t even ask what I think the odds of the Lions winning the Super Bowl; remember, I asked only to see them there.

The Leopard by Giuseppe di Lampedusa.  An elegant and elegaic story set in pre-Garibaldi Sicily.

Favorite YouTube video of 2013:

Ike & Tina Turner live on Playboy After Dark, 1969

Pre-nose job Tina, so hot that other hotness is pulled into orbit around her; Ike’s what-the-fuck hairdo; and a galloping tight band all blowing the minds of Hef’s swingers. Why, there’s even Barbie Benton hanging on his arm!  Their version of “Come Together” is 8.7 times sexier than anything that has ever appeared in that magazine. Bonus points for the occasional crowd shots of people outrageously attired folks nodding their heads in a “hey, these cats are groooovy” kinda way..

Best thing you ate in 2013:

Wasabi fried chicken at a brewpub in Asheville NC

Best thing you drank in 2013:

An as-yet-unnamed concoction of my own making:  vodka, homemade lemon-basil simple syrup, sodawater and slice of ginger root.  To be drunk on a rocking chair on a porch.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds Push the Sky Away

Favorite concert/show you attended in 2013:

Robbie Fulks with special guest Kelly Hogan at Kiki’s House of Righteous Music, in Madison, WI. They sounded great in this intimate setting(and not just because I did sound) and had the audience riveted, across two sold out shows. I hope to repeat the entire scenario in January of 2014.

Favorite 2013 movie:

Moonrise Kingdom by Wes Anderson. I know it came out in 2012, but I didn’t see it until I was on an airplane, this year. So, it counts. I love Wes Anderson movies, and this one reminded me why.

Category of Choice: Favorite New Destination of 2013:

Istanbul, Turkey. I had the good fortune to visit it, for the wedding of Tod A from Firewater. I didn’t want to leave, and I cannot wait to return (though, I hope to time it better with this next go-round, so that the city isn’t draped in tear gas).

Daft Punk …WTF? It’s programmed dance music.

Your top personal victory of 2013:

Staying in more, going out less.

What you were amazed still exists in 2013:

The fax machine. Do we really even need this anymore?

What you would like to see disappear in 2014:

Retail Wiz Pete

Favorite 2013 non-Bloodshot music album (All of the Bloodshot albums are clearly our favorites):

Two of my favorites were the amazingly exhaustive Los Nuggetz: 1960′s Punk, Pop, and Psychedelic Music from Latin America box set from Rocket Beat Records. 4 discs of fuzzy South American garage and Rock En Espanol… it’s swell! And while it wasn’t made in 2013, I discovered it, looked all over for it, and found the great Jukebox Mambo: Rumba & Afro-Accented Rhythm & Blues 1949 – 1960 from the UK’s Jazzman label this year… it’s some fantastic stuff, and has been on nigh-constant play at the homestead, along with the “Jukebox Jam” comps they released which are also fantastic.

Favorite concert/show you attended in 2013:

We saw Romanian Gypsy brass band Fanfare Ciocarlia at Martyr’s in Chicago and it was a wild, wild time.

Favorite 2013 movie:

The last new movie I saw in theaters was the Norwegian remake of Kon Tiki. That was pretty great and we had the whole theater to ourselves… I guess people just aren’t into Norwegian sailing epics these days.

Favorite 2013 TV or web show:

Meh.

Favorite book you read in 2013:

Dave Hoekstra’s The Supper Club Book set us out on a voyage through some of the upper Midwest’s finest Supper Clubs (y’know, those we could get to in a long weekend that we hadn’t been to already) and which was directly responsible for needing to buy bigger belts on our return.

I also enjoyed Chop Suey: A Cultural History of Chinese Food in the United States which was pretty damn interesting, and David Wondrich’s Punch: The Delights and Dangers of the Flowing Bowl which has greatly improved my punch-making ability.

Favorite YouTube video of 2013:

I discovered you can watch many, many complete episodes of Mystery Science Theater 3000 on YouTube and simultaneously found out I can watch YouTube on my TV… so that was one helluva boon.

Best thing you ate in 2013:

On our supper club tour we ate like big, fat kings for four days… I’d say the prime rib at Jax Cafe in Minneapolis, and the Chicken Oscar at Ishnala in Baraboo, WI took top honors for their fortifying, fatifying qualities and overall deliciosity.

Best thing you drank in 2013:

Since I started making my own liqueurs and syrups for cocktails at home, the overall drinking quality around the house has improved dramatically in general.

Category of Choice: Favorite Supper Club of 2013:

Ishnala Supper Club in Baraboo, WI is amazing. Everything….the drinks, the food, and especially the atmosphere. A light rain falling on Mirror Lake, brandy Old Fashioneds and giant portions of perfectly prepared meats from many animals, followed by an after dinner drink in the Arrowhead Bar…. can’t be beat…

What everyone else loved but you just didn’t “get” in 2013:

I think pretty much everything about current pop “culture.”

Best bad decision you made in 2013:

I don’t have those anymore.

Your top personal victory of 2013:

I don’t have those anymore either.

What you were amazed still exists in 2013:

Public decency kind-of.

What you would like to see disappear in 2014:

Twerking. Definitely twerking… it saddens me that I have to know what that is, or that anyone cares about it. Back in MY day, they just called that “being a gnarly skank.”

What you are most looking forward to in 2014:

What am I NOT looking forward to?

2014 New Year resolution and % chance of success:

Resowhutzit now?

Publicity Dude Josh

Jamie Lidell Jamie Lidell – some funky electronic tunes from an underrated artist

Patty Griffin American Kid

This Is The End. Danny McBride has the comedic Midas touch.

Favorite 2013 TV or web show:

Orange is the New Black

The Walking Dead

Favorite book you read in 2013:

The World Without Us – Alan Weisman

The End of Vandalism – Tom Drury

Best thing you ate in 2013:

The recent 14-side Thanksgiving meal was pretty insane and amazing. I’m still full.

Or having my mind blown by Rangoli on North Ave.

What everyone else loved but you just didn’t “get” in 2013:

What you were amazed still exists in 2013:

My ability to be amazed.

What you would like to see disappear in 2014:

Rob trying to twerk like Miley Cyrus. I wish I was kidding.

What you are most looking forward to in 2014:

A busy year with tons of releases and Bloodshot’s 20th anniversary.

2014 New Year resolution and % chance of success:

To get picked in a random draft to fight fellow young people in some sort of remote forest-y area. To hone my survival skills and learn to heal wounds and burns, while finding food and falling in love with someone I knew from my hometown. Then to survive a last ditch attempt by the competition tough guy and an attack by zombie dogs, only to find out I have to kill my new love interest.

% chance of success = 68%

2014 New Year resolution and % chance of success:

Go big or go to hell…or something.
