Personally, we're usually too busy on Sunday nights with our feet in the kiddie pool and our mitts wrapped around an icy mojito to be inside watching TV. We'll make an effort, though, to dry off our feet and dash inside and watch and listen.
Mr Rhythm is hitting the road in August and early September .
To help spread the word about his latest slab 'o' soul, some buddies at retail are coming through with some goodies for YOU, including chances to score free tickets to the shows. So, if you're in any of the of cities below, considered yourself tipped off...
SALT LAKE CITY (8/16): Slowtrain Records has the record on sale, on a listening post and giving away a pair of tickets to the show
AUSTIN (8/20): End of an Ear has the record on sale, giving away posters with purchase and running a contest to win a pair of tickets.
CINCINNATI (9/9): Shake It Records has the record on sale, giving away posters with purchase and running a contest to win a pair of tickets.
What state of our fine union comes to mind when you think of true bad ass soul? That's right, UTAH!
Andre is hitting Utah for the first time ever and we look forward to hearing about what sort of cultural earthquakes he may set off. Check out THIS incredible picture and article in Salt Lake City's local alt-paper the Slug.
"Andre Williams plays the kind of music that SLUG magazine is proud to get behind. Down and dirty, completely authentic & 100% original, a real soul rebel, his obscurity is almost baffling."
We swear, Andre gets more action than all of us put together.
P.S. We have absolutely NO idea why Mark Pickerel is lurking in the background.
As we've mentioned before, with the weirdo nature of this racket sometimes we run out of things for a long time, call them out of print, then PRESTO! some more mysteriously make their way to us.
So it is so with the Old 97s long unavailable CD-EP Early Tracks. Our Canadian distributor came across a box of them and sent them back. Now we are offering it up to you, WHILE SUPPLIES LAST for only $4.95.
Let's show our neighbors to the north that they were fools, FOOLS, I say, for sending these back....
Tix are only $12. Also on hard are Bear Hands, DJs, "custom Playboy energy drink cocktails" and Playmates. Real live Playmates! We may have to have bass player Luke Long tethered to the stage. This event sounds like it may teeter in the regions between the sublime the ridiculous and the fantastic.
Looking for an excuse to get out of the house and interact with actual human beings? HERE'S a list of independently-owned stores (Remember? Stores?) that have Jon's new album Old Devils on sale, or giving away stuff or letting you hear it for free on a listening post. Or all three.
Support local indies! We hope there's one near you.
Tell them we sent you! Enjoy your little excursion out to the world.
Make sure to check with the store for availability and act fast on the giveaways. All are first come first serve.
In July, Andre went home to Detroit to play in a big fancy room in front of a lot of fancy people for the 210 Detroit Concert of Colors.
Check out THIS video of him doing his classic "Bacon Fat." Included in his band are Matthew Smith (Volebeats, Outrageous Cherry, producer of Andre's last album), Don Was, and Dennis Coffey of the Funk Brothers (check out that wailing solo...)
The video and audio on these are super pro. ENJOY!
Down here in the BS dungeon, the one thing we probably love just as music around here is food (we also consider beer a food, by the way). Our resident neo-folkie, Ben Weaver, entered an essay challenge to be included in Anthony Bourdain's book, "Medium Raw."
Feel free to read and vote for his essay "Kitchen Bestiary" HERE.
Check back in October when we release Ben's new album, Mirepoix and Smoke-- songs inspired by his time spent in a Minneapolis restaurant's kitchen.
