Most Messed Up

Folks are comparing the energy and spirit of this record to their game-changing Bloodshot debut Wreck Your Life...and we have to agree.

Released on ATO Records

Most Messed Up finds the Old 97's at their raucous best, all swagger and heart, and just a little bit tipsy.

Folks have already been comparing the energy and spirit of this record to their game-changing Bloodshot debut Wreck Your Life.

Titles like “Wasted,” “Intervention,” “Wheels Off,” “Let’s Get Drunk & Get It On,” and “Most Messed Up” hint at the kind of narrators frontman Rhett Miller likes to inhabit – men who possess an appetite for indulgence and won’t let a few bad decisions get in the way of a good story. The magic in Miller’s songwriting lies in the depth that he lends his characters. Upon closer inspection, the hard partying and endless pursuit of a good time often reveals itself to be a Band-Aid covering up deeper wounds and emotional scars.

Features guest appearances by Tommy Stinson (The Replacements, Guns N’ Roses) and Jon Rauhouse (Neko Case) on lap-steel.

Short Description
  • This sounds like the band rolled in, hit record, and let it rip, and the final product is tight, raucous, and the hardest rockin' set of tunes these guys have offered up since 1999's Fight Songs.

    — Allmusic.com
  • Terse, wry, and supremely catchy.

    — The Atlantic
  • Listening to the fired up approach on these dozen songs there isn’t a noticeable difference in spirited energy from the music on 1995’s Wreck Your Life recorded when the foursome were young and hungry.

    — American Songwriter
