We'll let Joel himself give you the scoop:
Way back in 2019, I recorded an instrumental album of Beatles songs called Let It Be Guitar! Choosing tunes for that project was a fun but challenging task—there were too many candidates, and whittling down Beatles favorites that also worked best as guitar arrangements proved difficult. I’m proud of how that record turned out, but always felt like there was unfinished business. I wanted another crack at interpreting the Beatles canon—or maybe I had such a great time learning some of the best songs ever written that I just wanted to do it again!
Like most of the world, I woke up one morning in March 2020 without any work and stuck at home. That’s when I decided to take this sequel idea and turn it into a real project. I wanted to learn a new batch of Beatles melodies, strip them down to their essence, and record them solo. It would be a nice challenge to play nothing but acoustic for a month, and what better way to face this newfound isolation than to play unaccompanied guitar?
I taught myself fingerstyle from the records of acoustic blues and ragtime players like Blind Blake, Big Bill Broonzy, and Reverend Gary Davis. Down the road, when I got into Merle Travis and Chet Atkins, I was thankful I had already studied the alternate-thumb technique pioneered by these early bluesmen. On this album, I approached these 14 Beatles songs from scratch, making my own arrangements, but always with a nod to these early fingerstyle guitar heroes of American music.
Thank you for listening to me pluck my old Gibson J-50 flat top. I hope some of your Beatles favorites are here, and I hope you revisit some hidden gems you haven’t heard in a while. Let it be acoustic guitar!
